What goes over the internet
Radio itself comes from the DAB broadcast and needs no internet. The app only goes online for station logos, when Settings → "Download station logos" is on and the head unit has a connection. To find a station's logo it asks:
- RadioDNS (DNS lookups) and the broadcaster's service information, using the station's DAB identifiers (country, ensemble and service codes);
- the station's own website, for its icon;
- radio-browser.info, a community station directory, searched by the station's name.
These requests contain only the station's identifiers or name, plus what every internet request carries: the head unit's IP address and the app's name and version. Each of these services handles that under its own privacy policy. Turn the setting off and the app doesn't go online at all.
What stays on the head unit
Your station list, favourites, recently played stations, settings and the downloaded logos are stored in the app's own storage. So is a small diagnostics log of app events and reception (no song titles), kept for troubleshooting; it never leaves the device unless you copy it off yourself. Uninstalling the app, or clearing its storage, removes all of it.
Permissions
- USB: to use the DAB dongle. Android asks you first.
- Internet and network state: for the station logos, and to know when the head unit is online.
- Foreground service and notifications: to keep playing in the background, with the usual media notification.
- Start at boot and "Display over other apps": only for the optional "Start with the car" setting, which is off by default.
